Chapter 13

“Ok, girl, spill the beans.” Tanya had a cup of coffee for me as I walked out of the bathroom. “I can’t wait to hear everything.”

I was slowly becoming more familiar with her words, and I no longer had to ask her what everything meant. Apparently she wanted me to tell her about my date.

“It was pleasurable,” I answered, watching her face begin to twist as she waited for more. “It was an experience I have never enjoyed.”

“That’s a tease.” Her eyes twinkled and sparkled as a smile crept across her face. “Little more, please?”

“Bowling is not simple to do nor understand.” The ache in my back and arm reminded me of our adventure as Justin had named it. “I am unclear of the entertainment in throwing balls at pins.”

The cackle that filled the room informed me that my words had somehow humored her – likely because it had an alternate meaning in this time frame. I was learning that this was common with words I was accustomed to.

“Mostly people like to drink beer and act stupid with their friends.” A shrug of her shoulders informed me that she was not particularly fond of such adventures either. “That’s what happens when ya ruin the movie.”

“I most certainly did not ruin anything. Whomever created that disaster ruined it.” My face heated, being reminded once more of that horrible depiction of my life. “It was entirely unbelievable.”

“It’s a movie, Dahl,” she said, almost impatiently. I could tell she wasn’t going to put up with me spelling out my issues with it. “Ya didn’t mention havin’ lived back then did ya?”

“I would have preferred to do so.”

She took a sharp intake of breath.

“Yet I did not.”

“Good,” she said firmly, then raised her eyebrows and took on a teasing smile. “So what happened after I went to bed, huh?”

“Justin was a perfect gentleman.” Smiling, I remembered how our evening had ended. “We had a delightful conversation about work and then he wished me a good night and kissed me on the cheek.”

“You have a date with a hot guy that can’t take his eyes off of you, I give you alone time, and you talk about work?” She stood and walked towards the kitchen in what appeared to be frustration, then began to get to work on another coffee. “Dahlia, this isn’t 1842. It’s 2016. Ya gotta loosen up. That’s a shitty date.”

“I found it to be quite enjoyable. I happen to like Justin’s company and find myself interested in the restaurant as well.” I was a little perturbed by her insult. I thought everything had gone brilliantly after the movie disaster.

“He kissed you on the cheek.”

“Yes.” I smiled. “I know that it is considered bad form for such things on a first date, but I feel as though he and I are acquainted enough to allow it, what with working together and all.”

“Bad form? Are you kidding me? That date shoulda ended with fireworks.”

“How does one light them in an apartment?”

“Not real fireworks!” Her laughter filled the entire apartment.
